Projects

The ADVANCE Transcarpathian Advocacy and Development Center has carried out a number of projects in the last 2 decades. They are listed in thematic breakdown below:

Support to civil organisations and innitiatives

Support to local civil innitiatives (2007-2009) Objective: to support social innitiatives that address social problems of Berehove and Berehove district, as well as the development of Bereg region, involving local communities, in cooperation with the local population, NGOs and actors from the business sector. 

Cross-border cooperation of civil society organizations in the context of the EU Neighborhood Policy (2008) Representatives of ACCORD members (20 organizations) who took part in the almost one-year program were able to learn about the EU’s neighborhood policy through training courses and conferences. As part of the program, representatives of the network’s member organizations made a study trip to Hungary, during which they visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary, local governments and social institutions of non-governmental organizations.

Role and participation of Ukrainian civil society organisations in the monitoring of the European Neighbourhood Policy (2009) Participants of the conference involving 42 Ukrainian NGOs and international experts discussed opportunities for cooperation between the European Union and Ukraine in the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy.

EU Entrepreneurship Training and Knowledge Transfer for Transcarpathian Entrepreneurs (2009) The 44 start-ups and small entrepreneurs participating in the training got acquainted with business opportunities in the European Union, bilateral Hungarian-Ukrainian cooperation, topics of business enterprise, company formation, company operation, patent protection, tender writing and tender monitoring. 

Foreign policy public thinking, and foreign policy advocacy of non-governmental organizations (2010) The aim of the training series in Lemberg, Ivano-Frankivsk and Berehove was to acquaint representatives of Ukrainian organizations with the principles, standards and concepts of humanitarian work and the functioning of European humanitarian organizations.

Promoting humanitarian methodological education in Western Ukraine (2013-2014) Objective: to prepare Western Ukrainian NGOs for potential disasters and the response to these based on Hungarian experiences and best practices.

Child development

Supporting children in crisis in Berehove (from 2012) Objective: to establish social and professional cooperation to improve the mental, physical health and school catch-up of children facing crisis.

Development of disadvantaged children in Berehove (2013-2014): Objective: to develop 60 disadvantaged children living in and around Berehove in the so-called ’Tanoda-system’ (after-school education), and to provide capacity building for Ukrainian NGOs working with children.

Sure Start House (ongoing from 2017): The Sure Start House, which operates within the Advance Transcarpathian Advocacy and Development Center, literally provides sure start and safety for both children and mothers. The gap-filling project started three years ago based on a Hungarian model, and since then a lot of single mothers, mothers with many children and minor age mothers have received assistance, counselling and several other forms of support. 

Educational programs

Support to marginalized groups, networking and organizational development in Western Ukraine (2006-2008) Objective: to provide free educational opportunities for the unemployed; legal, social and psychological counseling, networking.

EU enterpreneurship training and knowledge transfer for Transcarpathian enterpreneurs (2009) The 44 small entrepreneurs participating in the training got acquainted with business opportunities within the European Union, bilateral Hungarian-Ukrainian cooperation, the topics of business entrepreneurship, company formation, company operation, patent protection, tender writing and tender monitoring.

Information Dissemination and Equal Access program (2009-2013) Objective: to support vulnerable young people, including the unemployed, who want to learn how to use a computer and acquire the skills needed to enter the labor market

Roma rights in Ukraine, helping Roma youths complete their secondary education (2010-2011) The program helped local Roma youths complete their studies through various group and individual development training courses thus supporting their further education.

Labor market training programs for the disadvantaged in Berehove and Miskolc (2011-2012) During the two-year program, nearly 400 people took part in social and legal counseling, 100 unemployed people in accredited IT training which were supplemented with English and Ukrainian language courses.

Incorporating the CIP (Complex Instruction Program) method into children’s school education (from 2013) The general objective of the program is to incorporate methods of integrated education into school educational process, enabling successful learning for children coming from different social backgrounds, and having special educational needs. Donor: World Childhood Foundation (Stockholm, Sweden)   

English Access Microscholarship Program (2019-2021)

Initiative of the US Embassy in Ukraine. The program’s objective is to enable young people living in disadvantaged, low-income families to learn English, deepen their language skills, learn about US culture, customs, and values; involve them in civic initiatives of local importance, increasing their leadership skills, building local community.

Humanitarian programs

Developing emergency and primary care in Transcarpathia and Ivano-Frankivsk to address the emergency-rehabilitation phase of the crisis (2014) In the framework of the project 32 village health centers in the Berehove district received equipment needed for life-saving and primary medical care, and the Ivano-Frankivsk County Children’s Clinic was enriched with 2 new monitors for medical testing.

Crisis in Ukraine – Humanitarian aid (2014) Following the clashes in Kiev, provision of humanitarian aid in a value of HUF half a million to care for the wounded. Additional HUF 2 million offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary was used to deliver hospital equipment necessary for the care of the wounded. Support to Ukrainian internally displaced persons in Ivano-Frankivsk and Lemberg.

School start campaign (2012-2014) Supporting the school start of disadvantaged children living in Berehove city and Berehove district with school equipment packages.

Emergency assistance (from 27 March 2020 to 26 April 2020). The ADVANCE Transcarpathian Advocacy and Development Center intends to support the Transcarpathian population in the framework of the Hungary Helps Program in order to reduce the effects of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the Center has been active in delivering donations from Hungarian Interchurch Aid and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary. In April 2020, a shipment offered by the Government of Hungary (100,000 protective masks and tens of thousands of other means of protection: goggles, protective clothing and disinfectants) arrived from Budapest to Berehove. The distribution of protective equipment and hygiene items was carried out by Hungarian Interchurhc Aid. At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, the organization, which has been carrying out humanitarian and development work in many regions of Ukraine for decades, undertook to deliver the aid quickly to its destination.  In the same year, in October 2020, Hungarian Interchurch Aid handed over ventilators donated by the Hungarian government to hospitals in Transcarpathia. In the end of January this year, another high-value Hungarian donation was received; this time 50 ventilators which were delivered to 46 hospitals in 10 counties.
